Murray was born on 11 October 1993 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He has also won three straight Callaway Junior Championships from the year 2006 to 2008 and was also the top-ranked golfer nationally in his age group. He had struggled with alcoholism anxiety and depression following the 2014 Southern Amateur, which he had been away from while in the lead, he was diagnosed with social anxiety. He used to follow the path of Christianity. In October 2022 he was injured in a scooter crash in Bermuda before the Betterfield Bermuda Championship which led him to withdraw from the event.

He died on 25 May 2024 at the age of 30. He withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Forth Worth, Texas, the day before cutting an illness. The next day his parents had confirmed that he had died by suicide. Players on the tour have honored Murray by wearing red and black ribbons during the final round. Murray had previously worn those colors which is in a tribute to the Carolina hurricanes.
