Career

According to Ukrainian papers, in 1980 Juraj Cintula relocated to Vilnius, which was then part of the Soviet Union. During his time there, he lived with the renowned Soviet singer Raisza Vasilieva.

In 2005, Cintula established the Rainbow Literature Club. Over the years, he has published three volumes of poetry and two novels, with his latest work released in 2015. Additionally, he became a member of the Slovak Writers’ Association in 2015.

Apart from his writing pursuits, before retiring, Cintula worked as a security guard in a shopping center located in Léva. Unfortunately, in 2016, he fell victim to a violent assault by a youth, possibly under the influence of drugs.

In response to his own experience of violence, in 2016 Cintula initiated a movement in Léva named “Hnutie proti násiliu” (Movement Against Violence). Despite initial plans, this movement did not evolve into a political party as intended. Notably, during this period, Cintula expressed sympathy towards the neo-Nazi and anti-migrant organization Slovenskí Branci (SB), which was shut down in 2022 and had ties to Russian ultra-nationalist groups.

On May 15, Juraj Cintula attempted to assassinate Prime Minister Robert Fico in front of the Nyitrabánya Cultural Center using a firearm he legally owned. He was apprehended at the scene by authorities. Following his arrest, Cintula revealed that he had been plotting the attack for approximately a month, citing disagreement with the government’s policies, particularly the decision to abolish public television. In response to his actions, the writers’ Association distanced itself from Cintula and revoked his membership.
