News-: On Monday, AICC social media national coordinator Bhavya Narasimhamurthy alleged that despite Congress leaders extending unconditional support, the BJP lacks the will to implement the Women’s Reservation Bill since 2014.
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhawan in Panaji, Goa, the Congress leader raised questions on the BJP and asked why it took so long for the BJP to implement this bill.
“BJP had the Women’s Reservation Bill in its manifesto in 2014. Who stopped Narendra Modi from bringing this bill in the last nine and a half years? They had the numbers, they just lacked the will,” she said.
“For the last several decades our commitment has been to women empowerment. The Women’s Reservation Bill is our brainchild and we have tried to introduce it several times. In 1989, BJP stalwarts had opposed it and they had voted against it,” she said.
She said BJP leaders LK Advani, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Yashwant Sinha, and Ram Jethmalani voted against it.
“In 2010, under the UPA government, we could pass the bill in the Rajya Sabha, but it could not move forward because we did not have the numbers,” she said.
“When BJP came to power, Congress President Sonia Gandhi had proposed and told PM Modi that Congress would support the bill unconditionally if it was introduced. In 2018, Rahul Gandhi also gave unconditional support to bring the bill to Parliament,” said Bhavya Narasimhamurthy.
She said that we do not see any will in BJP to implement this bill.
“This is just a show-off to ensure that they win the next Lok Sabha elections. They have always had a communal agenda, but now they have been exposed. His Women’s Bill will also not work this time.
She said, “I want to ask PM Modi who is stopping him from implementing this bill.” There is no logic behind waiting for census and delimitation.” She said that the population of women across the country is between 48 to 50 percent, so there is no point in conducting census and delimitation.
Bhavya Narasimhamurthy said, “We demand that this bill should be implemented immediately and OBC quota should also be given in it.”
